Yugoslav Domain Shutdown

YugoslaviaThe last vestiges of the defunct Yugoslavia are being removed from the internet. As of tomorrow, September 30th, 2009, the .YU TLD (Top Level Domain) will no longer exist. There are estimated to be about 4000 remaining websites that have not transitioned to new domains such as Serbia (.rs) and Montenegro (.me).

Yugoslavia fell apart in the mid 90's spawning a series of wars in the Balkans and new independant states such as Croatia, Serbia & Montenegro came into existence.

According to an article in the Guardian individual owners of .yu domains had the option to re-register under other existing country TLDs for approximately 25 euros. The .yu domain isn't the only country specific TLD for a non-existant country. The TLD for the former Soviet Union, .su, is still in operation to this day.

Implications

Marketers should consider removing all .yu addresses that may still exist in their lists as legacy and non deliverable moving forward. This will mitigate a spike in bounces and future delivery problems.
